Press Statement: Zminijietna reaction to Caritas Report and poverty in Malta.

8th May 2022Press Statement: Zminijietna reaction to Caritas Report and poverty in Malta.
The Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna said that “the Caritas report exposes the urgency to introduce measures that directly affect low-income families positively, such as reform of the cost of living mechanism”.
“On social-economic terms, with the involvement of MCESD, Malta should move towards a legal definition and calculation of an adequate basic income. The discussion should also include ways and means to financially sustain such measure”.
Zminijietna added that “the Government should study and implement the European Commission recommendation for each member state to have at least 70% of all its workforce covered by a collective bargaining. The Nationalist party should also back EU recommendation”.
“Furthermore, Zminijietna insists for an increase in the statutory minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage should be viewed as a tool to alleviate the working people from poverty and exploitation, rather than as a means to keep labour costs down. On the other hand, the Government should use EU funds to assist companies financially to invest more in green technology and innovations to reduce their annual costs”.

Stqarrija għall-istampa:Reazzjoni ta’ Zminijietna għar-Rapport tal-Caritas u l-faqar f’Malta.
L-għaqda Xellugija Żminijietna qalet li “ir-rapport tal-Caritas jesponi l-urġenza biex jiġu ntrodotti miżuri li jolqtu direttament b’mod pożittiv lill-familji bi dħul baxx, bħar-riforma tal-mekkaniżmu tal-għoli tal-ħajja”.
“F’termini soċjo-ekonomiċi, bl-involviment tal-MCESD, Malta għandha timxi lejn tfassil ta’ qafas legali u kalkolu xjentifiku ta’ ‘dħul bażiku adegwat’. Id-diskussjoni għandha tinkludi wkoll modi u mezzi biex tiġi sostnuta finanzjarjament tali miżura”.
Żminijietna żiedet tgħid li “r-rakkomandazzjonijiet tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea sabiex kull stat membru joħroġ b’soluzzjonijiet biex iżid in-numru ta’ ħaddiema imsieħba f’Unjin għal 70% tal-ħaddiema kollha fil-pajjiz għandha tiġi mplimentata mill-Gvern tul il-legislatura. Il-partit fl-oppożizzjoni għandu wkoll jappoġġja din ir-rakkomandazzjoni” .
“Barra minn hekk, Żminijietna tinsisti għal żieda fil-paga minima statutorja. Zieda fil-paga minima għandha titqies bħala għodda biex il-ħaddiem jitbiegħed mill-faqar u l-isfruttament, aktar milli bħala mezz biex inżommu l-ispejjeż tax-xogħol baxxi. Min-naħa l-oħra, il-Gvern għandu juża fondi tal-UE biex jassisti finanzjarjament kumpaniji lokali biex jinvestu aktar f’teknoloġija ħadra sabiex inaqqsu l-ispiza annwali tagħhom”.
