The militant poet and lawyer Rafiq Sallum, pan-Arabist, brilliant Arab thinker was born in Homs in 1891. He studied in Homs, Beirut and Astana. He is the author of the first modern book on economics in the Arabic language: ” The Life of the Country in Economic Science” and the 800-page book “The Rights of the State” which has not been published. He wrote a novel he called “Diseases of the New Age.” He was a lawyer who practiced journalism and taught foreign languages (Russian-Greek-Turkish) . His crime was to write highly critical revolutionary poetry, to agitate his compatriots and call on them to demand independence from the Ottoman Empire. He was barely twenty-five when he was hanged by Ottoman forces after being savagely tortured .

Son of immigrants, of a Palestinian father and a Lebanese mother, Mahfud Massis (1916-1990), is a poet, contemporary of Pablo Neruda , who had to go into exile in Venezuela when Pinochet took power on September 11, 1973 . People are often surprised to learn that Chile has the largest diaspora of Palestinians, outside the Arab world, although it is much older than the Nakba (Palestinians started arriving in the 1870s). By changing his name from Antonio Macias to the Arabic version, Mahfud Massis he identified himself not only as a Mahjar poet but also as a “black poet”. In Latin America, Poesia Negra refers to poetic currents that refer to the experiences of people of African descent with their own perspective and voice.
